Rachael Clegg is an art director, artist and journalist who happens to have been born into a TT-racing dynasty.
Her work fuses history, wit and words to create bold, striking photographs that each embody or tell a factual story. Her clients include Ferodo, SES satellites and Champion.
The subjects of her surreal photographs include - among many other topics - the Isle of Man TT races, the Nürburgring and the evolution of telecommunications. No commission is too dry, no subject too obscure for Rachael. She relishes the opportunity to harness facts and translate them into impactful images.
Rachael’s project work is accompanied with short snippets of text - penned by the artist herself - which itself becomes part of the artwork. And, like her images, her words are straight-to-the-point - a directness which is most unusual in the contemporary art world. This is a woman who fuses grit and sophistication - a rare combination.
Rachael graduated with a first-class degree in Art History followed by an Art History MA specialising in post-war American art and literature. She also worked at Tate Liverpool, leading workshops and working as an intern in the exhibitions department. But while in the midst of pursuing her curatorial career, with no money or place to live, she encountered another career - by accident.
She was invited to a gig in Manchester with some friends. Having no cash, she pretended to be a journalist, blagged her way into the gig, interviewed the band, got the interview published and decided that journalism was her fate. She has worked as a features writer, music writer and classic motorsport writer ever since, contributing to several titles, including Octane, Classic Bike Guide, The Daily Telegraph and The Classic Motorcycle.
Now, of course, these paths - art, motorsport and journalism - have crossed and inspired a unique approach to working: one that involves a bit of chain grease, a library of books and a lot of thinking.
Rachael takes commissions for art direction from commercial clients as well as private individuals. Her work ranges from exhibition photography to advertising campaigns.
