GINGER HALL PINT
GINGER HALL PINT
Ginger Hall is from Rachael Clegg’s Milestones series in which every single image illustrates an event from the history of the Isle of Man TT Races.
The story:
In the heady days of the 1960s, the ‘TT Special’ reporters would often camp out at Ginger Hall and enjoy the racing with an ale. One reporter wrote: ‘Ginger Hall is a delightful spot for a pressman who wishes to combine sport with relaxation’.
Indeed, beer and racing have been buddies for some years, never more so than in the 1982 Senior when Charlie Williams resolved a technical issue over a pint. Williams was riding Boet Van Dulmen’s former GP Yamaha: a formidable machine but riddled with technical issues at this TT. After a fraught start, with an intermittent fault, Williams pulled in at the Sulby Glen Hotel, where his pal, ex TT racer Terry Shepherd, was spectating. Handing the frustrated Williams a pint, Shepherd looked at the machine and realised what was wrong: the fuel pipe was getting trapped. Williams finished his drink, re-routed the pipe, headed off and finished 13th, setting the fastest lap at a speed of 115.08mph.
