Verandah Weather Girls is from Rachael Clegg’s Milestones series in which every single image illustrates an event from the history of the Isle of Man TT Races.

The story:

The Isle of Man has notoriously unpredictable weather, especially on the Mountain section. And few events witnessed the full spectrum of weather as much as the 1959 TT, when the Senior race was postponed to the Saturday because of the inclement conditions. John Surtees left the Start in full sunshine but it was short-lived: the race was soon plagued by a downpour and on the mountain it had started to hail. Surtees was so cold at the end of the race that he had to be helped off his machine and wrapped up in a duffle coat.
