SHOPPING TROLLEY AT GUTHRIES
SHOPPING TROLLEY AT GUTHRIES
Shopping Trolley at Guthries is from Rachael Clegg’s Milestones series in which every single image illustrates an event from the history of the Isle of Man TT Races.
The story:
Sidecar champions Stan Dibben and Eric Oliver crashed here, at Guthries, in 1960 after their front forks came off. Oliver was catapulted over the barbed wire fence and Dibben was caught in it. Oliver broke his back and Dibben was almost decapitated: the barbed wire dug into his neck and stopped him. But Dibben - a tough man - was okay and continued with his successful racing career and entrepreneurial pursuits. Among them was the concept of a fully rotating shopping trolley castor wheel. So good were the fully-rotating castors that they were even tested by Jeremy Clarkson on TV, who claimed they made a shopping trolley ‘steer like a Ferrari’.
