THE DUNLOPS AND THE FISHING BOAT
THE DUNLOPS AND THE FISHING BOAT
The Dunlops and the Fishing Boat is from the 2024 Milestones collection in which all the images tell a story from that most sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course.
The story:
It was one night on the way to the 1985 Isle of Man TT when Joey and Robert Dunlop, along with eight others, almost lost their lives while crossing the Irish Sea in a fishing boat called Tomamona. The decision to travel in this unorthodox vessel was owing to Joey’s superstition for this was the boat on which he travelled to the 1980 TT, when he won the Classic race after a mighty battle with Mick Grant (Honda), setting the first 115 mph lap. Consequently, Joey believed the boat was lucky. In reality, it couldn’t have been unluckier. Just as Robert Dunlop was cooking sausages and complained there was no salt, sea water burst into the boat (and with it enough salt for a thousand fry-ups) and it started to sink. Robert and Joey unstrapped all the bikes tied to the deck and threw jerry cans into the sea in order to have something to cling to. Miraculously, they all survived and both Dunlops made it to the TT that year.
