REM FOWLER'S NORTON AND THE BIRTH OF DUNLOP
REM FOWLER'S NORTON AND THE BIRTH OF DUNLOP
Rem Fowler’s Norton and the Birth of Dunlop is from the 2022 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.
The story:
History was made on this very machine when Rem Fowler raced it to victory in the inaugural Isle of Man TT in 1907 with an average speed of 36.22 mph and a fastest speed of 42.91 mph. It was also Dunlop’s first foray into motorcycle racing, marking the beginning of a relationship between the tyre company and the Isle of Man TT that still thrives today. But the technological developments that contributed to Fowler’s historic win had humble beginnings: John Boyd Dunlop developed the pneumatic tyre after experimenting on his son’s tricycle. Dunlop - a veterinary surgeon - was inspired to invent an impact-softening device following numerous bone-shaking journeys in his dog cart and after dabbling with various materials it was the air-filled rubber tyre that proved most effective. By 1888 Dunlop had filed a patent and by 1910 the company had established its own rubber plantations.
