The KARUSSELL, THE NÜRBURGRING
The KARUSSELL, THE NÜRBURGRING
Large framed giclée print, edition of 30, 98cm by 98cm
The Karussell is part of Rachael Clegg’s Nürburgring series, in which every image illustrates a story about Europe’s most treacherous, twisting, challenging racing circuit. All images are designed by Rachael and shot - on location - by Ian Parry at the epic Nordschleife circuit. Each image ‘recreates’ a specific event in the Nürburgring’s history at the exact spot that event happened.
The story:
Known as ‘Caracciola’s Karussel’ this section takes its name from Ringmeister Rudoph Caracciola, who won the very first car race held at the Nurburgring in 1927, driving his super-charged Mercedes SSK, known as the ‘White Elephant’.
A precise and strategic driver, Caracciola shaved valuable time off his laps by ‘hugging’ the inside of the bend’s drainage ditch. Eventually, the ditch was made into a banked ‘carousel’ and named after the Nurburgring’s inaugural winner.
