MICK GRANT'S GRIT
MICK GRANT'S GRIT
Mick Grant’s Grit is from the 2024 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.
The story:
It was during the 1975 Classic TT that Yorkshireman Mick ‘Gritty’ Grant (nicknamed for his no-nonsense resilience) broke Mike Hailwood’s long-standing Isle of Man TT lap record of 105.62mph, with Grant lapping at 109.82mph. This led Mike Hailwood - who was watching at the Start - to utter an affectionate ‘you bastard’. But things soon went downhill for Grant: after smashing the record his chain broke at the Gooseneck. A nearby fan ran into the track and grabbed the chain but burned his hand. This bit of schadenfreude cheered Grant up no end.
