HANDLEY'S PAPER AIRPLANE
HANDLEY'S PAPER AIRPLANE
Handley’s Paper Airplane is from Rachael Clegg’s Milestones series in which every single image illustrates an event from the history of the Isle of Man TT Races.
The story:
Four-time TT winner Walter Handley was known for his erratic riding style. He was said to ‘make crashing a fine art’, which added to his allure among spectators. Handley was also highly competitive on short circuits and raced cars as well. But it was only while flying that the fast-living star claimed he actually relaxed. A fine pilot, Handley volunteered to serve in the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War but was killed after his Bell P39 Airacobra engine failed following take-off from Kirkbride, Cumberland, in 1941.
