THE INDIAN AND THE SOLDIER
THE INDIAN AND THE SOLDIER
The Indian and the Soldier is from Rachael Clegg’s Milestones series in which every single image illustrates an event from the history of the Isle of Man TT Races.
The story:
The 1914 Senior race proved to be an exciting one when veteran TT pilot Oliver Godfrey, racing an Indian, and debut TT racer Howard Davies, on a Sunbeam, both tied for second place. The pair finished with a race time of 4.39.12 hours and an average speed of 48.50,mph. Within a few months, however, the First World War was declared and both men were called up. Godfrey was enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Davies joined the Army but transferred to the RFC in 1916. Both men spent the summer of that year living in tents and using farmer’s fields as runways. Sadly, Godfrey was shot down and killed flying the notoriously cumbersome Martynside G100 plane. Davies - who was employed on artillery spotting work - was shot down twice. On the first occasion he managed to return to British army lines but on the second he was reported as being killed in action.
