GLEN ENGLISH AND THE GLOVE
GLEN ENGLISH AND THE GLOVE
Glen English and the Glove is from the 2022 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.
The story:
Glen English had an eventful Lightweight TT practice in 1996 on his Honda RS 250. The Cornwall based-rider was sponsored by a skip company that year and it was a skip in which some of his kit ended up following the practice session. But more of that later…
English - who fabricates armoury for Hollywood studios as his day job - was almost brought off his machine on the mountain section after the velcro on his glove stuck to his leg. He said: "I had been out that day on the 125cc but the higher speed of the 250cc machine meant that my velcro used to come undone if I didn't tape them down. It was really off-putting and while I could use my left hand to fix the right-hand velcro strap, I couldn’t take my right hand off the throttle to fix the left strap. So instead I would roll the left hand down my leg to fasten the strap down.” This was working fine. Until he reached Bungalow Bridge. “I was fast approaching the bend at about 140mph and I tried to put my hand back on the handlebar but it just wouldn’t move. It was as if someone was pinning down my hand. Twice I pulled it but I still couldn't free it, I had no idea what was happening and even thought the Devil had got me! I eventually released my hand - which was stuck on a knee slider - but by this point I had missed my braking marker so I had to ride up the grass bank. It was my most terrifying moment ever but I was so lucky. I chucked the gloves in the skip as soon as I could!”
